Lavada Thorpe, age 90 of DeLand, FL, passed away Saturday
afternoon, August 27, 2016. She was born June 28, 1926 in Gatliff,
KY, to Rosa and Elmo McKiddy. Lavada was a high school graduate
and soon after met her future husband, Ishmael Thorpe, while
working at an ammunition plant in Indiana during the war. Once
married and after being a stay-at-home mother to her five children
she became a government social worker, helping six families out of
the circle of poverty. During her career as a social worker,
Lavada was able to obtain an associates degree, as well as, form a
non-profit organization called "The Buying Club", that networked
local farmers to welfare recipients which benefited both parties.
Additionally, Lavada formed a group at the Golden Age Senior
Center, in Xenia, OH, called "The Helping Hands Club", who donated
their crochet and knitted creations to local people in need.
Preceded in death by her husband of 41 years, Ishmael Thorpe, her
brothers Kelsey (KD) McKiddy and Edgar Alfred McKiddy, her sisters
Laura Marie Cooper and Thelma June Byrd, her grandsons Steven
Allen Bishop and Jason Butler.
Lavada is survived by her sister Eula Partin, her six children, daughters Shirley Jean Camacho
(husband Bill), Brenda Joyce Butler, Carol Ann Collier, Pamela
Lynn Post, Christina Dawn Thorpe Rogers (husband Patrick) and son
Harold Thorpe, her nine grand children, her nineteen great
grandchildren and her two great great grandchildren. Formal
funeral services will be held at the Beavercreek Chapel on
Thursday, September 1, 2016 as follows:

Funeral Ceremony: 1:30pm – 2:00pm
