Laura A. Swihart (Gerard), Age 54, of Kettering, passed away on December 13th surrounded by family and friends.
Laura was born in Cincinnati Ohio to Betty and Bill Gerard on December 18th 1962. Following high school she went on to earn her licensure in registered nursing. She dedicated the last 2 decades providing patient care as an orthopedic nurse at Kettering Medical Center. Laura fought her diagnosis with unbreakable determination for years, and vowed to "do all of the things" with those she loved, until the very end. Her spirit was unwavering and her positive presence was felt by all who had the privilege of calling her a friend. She upheld so many traditions from mud volleyball tournaments, to Jimmy Buffett concerts, and especially tailgating for her beloved Cincinnati Bengals. These traditions will surely continue, through her family and friends. But most of all Laura cherished all memories, big or small, with her children, grandchildren, and the love of her life.
Laura is preceded in death by her mother, Betty Gerard.
She is survived by her children Marie (Stephanie) Swihart, Marissa (Mike) Shockey, and Miranda Swihart. Her life partner and soulmate Steve Ray. Her two favorite people on the planet, her grandchildren Gabriel and Andersen Shockey. Sister Linda (Richard) McKenzie. Father Bill Gerard. And her "babies" Ziggy and Nooga. Laura is also survived by two aunts, uncle, and multiple nieces, nephews and cousins. Laura's friends were also her family, and she was a wonderful second mother to many.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Sarcoma Foundation of America at curesarcoma.org/donate. Condolences may be left in Laura's online guestbook at NewcomerDayton.com. A celebration of life will be held following the holidays, date to be determined.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude to everyone that had a role in the life that Laura lived to the fullest. The love that surrounded her played a part in the overwhelming odds she overcame. She will forever live on through all that knew her, and will be watching over us all from her chair on the beach.
