Larry W. Byrd was a loving husband, father, Papa, brother, son, and friend. He passed unexpectedly on Tuesday, May 28th, 2024. He was 70 years old, born on September 5th, 1953, in Olney, IL. He resided in Huber Heights, OH, with his wife, Pam. He is preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Margie Byrd.
He is survived by his wife, Pam Byrd; his son and daughter-in-law, Alex and Dalila Byrd; his grandchildren, Ezra and Pierce Byrd; his siblings, sister Gloria, twin brother Gary, sister Loretta, brother Wes, and their families. Larry is also survived by numerous other family and friends.
Education was very meaningful to him, and he received his Bachelor and Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering from University of Iowa. (“Wouldn’t he want me to say, Go Hawkeyes!”?) He received his Doctorate of Philosophy from North Carolina State University in December of 1984. After working 32 years as a Research Engineer at Wright Patterson Air Force Base, he retired in January 2023. Not one to rest idly in retirement, he became a licensed massage therapist in December 2022, and worked at Pike Therapy Center.
Larry enjoyed helping others, was devoted to his faith, and was an active member of Bath Presbyterian Church. He was an avid fisherman, enjoyed running, and went on annual hunts for the elusive morels. He so enjoyed reading, always loving another good story. He and his wife have danced with the Double H Squares for more than 15 years, completed dozens of Volksmarches in many states, and their memories of travels and walking in England were cherished. Their opportunities to attend exercise classes together at the “Y” were fun and beneficial. Who cares if he was faster than all of us. Larry will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation, the American Red Cross, or Bath Presbyterian Church.
Visitation with Larry’s family will be held on Wednesday, June 5th, from 9:30-11a.m., followed by his memorial service from 11-Noon at Bath Presbyterian Church, 4624 Bath Rd, Dayton, OH 45424.
