Lagrant Jaynes, age 67 went to sleep on December 14, 2023. Lagrant was born in Toledo, OH on January 15, 1956, to Nathaniel and Mary Lois Jaynes. Lagrant was a graduate of DeVilbiss High School and attended The Toledo University. He en-listed in the United States Navy in March 1974 and served until he received a medical discharge in 1981. Lagrant married Diane Hawkins April 19, 1976 and had a son and a daughter, they were married 32 years. Together, they have 6 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. They divorced in 2008, although they were separated on paper, they remained friends and continued to care and look out for one another until his death. They had a unique in-separable relationship like no other. Their relationship to one another spoke volumes and exhibited total commitment to one another, exemplifying the meaning of "Till Death Do Us Part".
Lagrant worked 16 years at the United States Postal Service in Denver, CO and also worked for Capital University in Columbus, OH as Mail Room Manager for 10 years.
Lagrant was baptized on August 16, 1986 by G.A. Bryant at the Community SDA Church in Denver, CO along with his son and daughter.
Lagrant had a caring and giving heart; this was his favorite time of year, Christmas! He loved spoiling his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was known as the "Candy Man". Papa always had lots of candy to slip to the kids while Nana disagreed to his tactics. He loved to travel, bowl, go fishing, and play softball. He was known as the family DJ making mixed tapes of R&B, Jazz, Funk and Hip Hop.
Lagrant was preceded in death by his father, Nathaniel Jaynes; sisters, Elaine Bohannan and Sheila Jaynes; and brother, Nathan Jaynes.
Lagrant was survived by his loving and devoted (ex-wife), Diane Hawkins of Dayton, OH; son, Andrey Jaynes; daughter, Deidra Jaynes-Dotson, both of Columbus, OH; grandchildren, Dei'dra Jaynes, Dontrell Jaynes, Shaylynn Jaynes, Rilen Jaynes and Scott Jaynes, all of Columbus, OH DeAndre Lagrant Jaynes, of Dayton, OH; great-grandchildren, Dabriyas Jaynes, Ky'Ren Williams and DeLani Jaynes, of Columbus, OH; mother, Mary Lois Jaynes; siblings, Anthony Jaynes, Keith Jaynes, Denise Jaynes and Vicki Jaynes, all of Toledo, OH; and a host of nieces; nephews; cousins and extended relatives.
The family will receive friends on Friday, December 29, 2023 from 11am-12pm at the Newcomer North Chapel, 4104 Needmore Rd, Dayton, OH 45424. The funeral service will follow at 12pm. Lagrant will be laid to rest with military honors at Dayton National Cemetery at 2pm.
