It is with great sadness that the family of Joy Annette Edwards Prior announce her passing on August 22, 2019 at the age of 72. Preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Gay Edwards, Joy is survived by her daughter, Christie Thompson, son-in-law, Greg Thompson and grandchildren, Katelyn and Cole.
Joy was born August 2, 1947, in Lima, Ohio. She attended Lima Senior High School and graduated in 1965. She then attended Miami University and completed her degree in Business and English Education from The Ohio State University in 1970. She went on to become a high school English teacher. Beginning in 1977, she began working for UNISYS (Burroughs) as a clerk and moved up to finance manager in her 21 years of service, including 3 corporate moves. From 2003 to 2011, Joy was a contractor at Honda Research Institute working as a financial analyst. She retired and found a new passion, making jewelry. She loved spending time with her grandchildren.
Following in her mother's footsteps, Joy pledged into the service sorority, Beta Sigma Phi, in 1975. She served in every committee and office of the Presidency of her chapter, Laureate Beta Rho, and as well as attaining the degree of Master, Silver Circle, Queen of Hearts and Order of the Rose. Joy also served as City Council President for several years, representing the local chapters of BSP in central Ohio for the last two years, until City Council was disbanded in 2017.
She always told the new members of her chapter, Laureate Beta Rho, who had a hard time memorizing the Opening and Closing Rituals, that as a little girl, she remembers reciting them along with the members of her mother's sorority meetings, and not to feel bad about not memorizing them immediately, as it will take some time. That graciousness combined with a bit of sass, endeared Joy to all the members of her chapter as well as other chapters in and out of the United States. Laureate Beta Rho will miss her greatly: she was outspoken in truth, smart, compassionate, and a champion of Life, Learning and Friendship.
