Josie Gwendolyn (Holland) Duren-Ogletree

Josie Gwendolyn (Holland) Duren-Ogletree, age 92, of Dayton, passed away peacefully at home on January 10, 2023. She was born in Boston, Georgia on August 19, 1930.

Josie was preceded in death by her parents, Christine and Mitchell Hopkins Sr.; Eura D. Holland, Thomas L. Duren Sr., and Luther Ogletree; grandmother, Josie Bell Richardson; and her brothers, Carlton Hopkins and Mitchell S. Hopkins.

She is survived by her three daughters: Linda Holland, Janice Holland-Atwater, and Gayle Holland; Grandson, JeVon, spouse Tanisha, Holland; Granddaughter, Chrystyna Holland; Granddaughter, Raaven Holland; Five great-grandchildren: Amel Holland, Ava Holland, Hayden Holland-Parker, Karter Holland, and Rhyan Holland-Joplin; and a host of family and friends.

She graduated from Morris Brown College, where she received her Bachelor's Degree. After, she graduated with a Master's Degree from the University of Dayton in '89. She retired after working for 42 years for Dayton Public Schools, where she was an educator and principal. She was an active member with Mt. Enon Missionary Baptist Church, and she was the Director of the Mt. Enon Family Life Center. She was a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. She was also part of the Eastern Star Dayton Chapter. She was a volunteer for the Dayton Art Institute as a Docent, and she was also a volunteer usher at the Benjamin & Marian Schuster Performing Arts Center downtown. In addition, she served as a Dayton Public Schools Science Fair Judge.

A visitation will be held from 10:00am to 10:30am at Mt. Enon Missionary Baptist Church, 1501 W Third Street, Dayton, OH 45402, where the service will begin at 10:30am, officiated by Pastor Cory Pruitt. Following the services, Josie will be laid to rest at Dayton National Cemetery.
