Sumner, Joseph Dwight, age 67, born in Cherry Point, N.C., on July 19, 1955, passed away on February 3, 2023 in Dayton, Ohio after a long, courageous battle against metastatic prostate and bone cancer. He was surrounded by those he loved. Joe was preceded in death by his father, James Raoul Sumner, in 2002, his mother Audrey Hilda Sumner (Jaksch), in 2013, and his brother, Edward Sumner, in 2020. He is survived by his loving wife, Shirley Stewart Sumner, of 36 years (October 18, 1986), two daughters, Dustine Solana Sumner (Nathan Sparks) and Mickenzie J. Sumner, dog, Lucas, sister, Gloria Creeger (Sumner), brother, Michael Sumner and a multitude of family and friends.
Joe was a 1973 graduate of Fairborn Baker High School, Fairborn, Ohio. Following graduation he served with the United States Air Force in Turkey as an Airman First Class. After the military, Joe started his career in the aftermarket auto parts industry where he went on to become the founder and owner of D&M Auto Parts, Xenia, Ohio in 2010. As an avid bowler with multiple honors scores, Joe became the coach of the Beavercreek High School Bowling Program. During his 13 year tenure, 2004-2017, the boys and girls varsity teams had multiple Greater Western Ohio Conference championships, three state championships, varsity girls in 2007 and 2014, varsity boys in 2015, as well as an individual state champion in 2010. For these successes, Joe was awarded conference Coach of the Year in 2008, 2011 and 2014, State of Ohio Coach of the Year in 2014, and was inducted into the Beavercreek High School Hall of Fame in 2019.
Joe loved life and enjoyed it to the fullest. He spent time camping with his wife, and attending NHRA and Nascar events with his daughters. He loved music, fishing, racing, Florida Gators sports teams, traveling to Las Vegas and he had a fondness for boxers. Joe will be remembered for the strength he showed while battling this disease in order to create more memories with his family and to have the opportunity to drink one more beer with his friends.
You are invited to join the family at the Celebration of Life service on Saturday, February 25, 2023 at 6:00 pm at Beaver Vu Bowl, 1238 N. Fairfield Rd, Beavercreek, Ohio 45432. Military Honors will take place at 7:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to your favorite patriotic organization or Beavercreek High School Bowling Team, 2660 Dayton Xenia Rd, Dayton, Ohio 45434, addressed in care of the Beavercreek High School Boosters in memory of Hall of Fame Coach, Joe Sumner.
