Joseph J. Romanick, Jr. 94, passed away April 23, 2018 at St. Leonard's Retirement Community.
Joe was born June 19, 1923 in Plymouth Twp. PA, to the late Joseph Sr. and Mary (Brozena) Romanick. Joe was preceded in death by his brothers, Leonard, Albert and sister Helen. He is survived by his wife of 61 years; Mary T (Sleva); his children Marie (Tom) Gress, Theresa (Gary) Westfall, Rose (Joe) Plummer, Clare (Jim) Common and Angela (Mike) Nedeff; his grandchildren; Rachel, Monica, Nathan and Karoline; and many nieces and nephews.
Joe was a graduate of Plymouth High School, class of 1941. He worked in the Test Lab at the Philadelphia Navy Yard from 1941 to 1944 and attended Temple University. In 1944, he enlisted in the US Army and served as an Infantryman in the European Theatre until his discharge from the Army in 1946. After WWII, he attended Penn State University at University Park, PA graduating as an Aeronautical Engineer in 1950. In September of that year, he was recalled to service for the Korean War and was commissioned an officer in the USAF where he served during the Korean and Vietnam Wars.
After 24 years of military service he retired at WPAFB in June, 1968. He began work that summer as a Systems Management Engineer at WPAFB, a position he held until his retirement from Civil Service in June 1985.
Joe's interest in airplanes dated back to his childhood, as he enjoyed building models from balsa wood kits. He was an avid reader, carpenter and gardener. He enjoyed home improvement projects and loved animals, especially dogs. After retirement, he and Mary enjoyed traveling. Their many trips included visits to all 50 states as well as Canada and Europe.
Joe was a Charter Member of St. Peter Catholic Church in Huber Heights. He volunteered for the Parish Finance Committee, taught Catholic Education classes, was a Eucharistic Minister, and life long Volunteer for the Annual Parish Festival. Joe also enjoyed membership with the Knights of Columbus Council and Retired Officer's Association.
Family will receive friends at St. Leonard's Church, 8100 Clyo Road Centerville, Ohio from 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM Monday April 30th. Mass of Christian Burial following at 11:30 AM. Burial to follow at Calvary Cemetery.
