CARL, Joseph William, 71 years old, passed from this life on Wednesday, March 13, 2013 at his home in Yellow Springs, OH. Survived by his wife of 51 years, Laurie Gail (Van Schelt); their three sons, Dr. Joseph William Carl, Jr. (son, Adam), Christopher Van Schelt Carl (sons, SrA Ryan Carl, USAF, Dylan, Hunter, Chase), and SMSgt. Michael Wayne Carl, USAF (son, Michael and daughter, Caroline); brother, Robert Carl (Jaye and Hannah); mother-in-law, Helen Hale; sisters-in-law, Leslie MacMullen (George, Tracey, Georgianne, Kathryn), Lynn Moore (Joe, Jacqueline, Paul), and niece, Dawnanne Carl.

He was born in Bronx, NY. Joe graduated from Teaneck High School, Class of 1959, Teaneck, NJ and enlisted in the USAF at the age of 17. He received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Missouri in electrical engineering. He attended Officers' Training School, graduated in 1965. He earned the honor of becoming a professional engineer, and continued his education by earning a Master's degree from the Air Force Institute of Technology, WPAFB, and a PhD in electrical engineering from the Ohio State University. He retired after 25 years of service at the rank of Lt. Col. He then joined Harris Corporation in Melbourne, FL, finishing up his career as an electrical engineer in Millersville, MD after 15 years, and retired to Yellow Springs, OH to be near family. His intellectual pursuits brought him back to the classroom teaching Systems Engineering at the Air Force Institute of Technology and Riverside Research Institute.

He was a classical guitar player, Master SCUBA diver, blue water sailor, marathon runner, triathlete, artist, poet, educator, and philosopher. He was loved and respected by many and was known for his gentle, caring, nature which was reflected throughout his life. He saw miracles in life's ordinary moments. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and had a great appreciation for his extended family.

Visitation will be Tuesday, March 26, 2013 at 3:00 p.m., followed by a memorial service at 4:00 p.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home, 3380 Dayton-Xenia Rd., Beavercreek, OH 45432. In lieu of flowers, please make memorial donations to Hospice of Dayton, 324 Wilmington Ave., Dayton, OH 45420.
