DOAN, Johnie Michael
Age 64, a resident of Riverside, passed away unexpectedly, Monday, April 12, 2010.
He was born in Scott County, KY. Johnie served in the US Air Force where he retired as a Colonel. He served during the Vietnam War & the Persian Gulf War. Johnie graduated from Wright State University & is a member of the WSU Alumni Association. Johnie was a life member of the VFW Post 657 & a member of the American Legion 776. Johnie received the Angel Award from Wright-Patterson AFB by the Wing Commander for his volunteer work at the WPAFB Thrift Shop. He was a past member of the Vietnam Memorial Moving Wall Committee.
Johnie began volunteering with the city of Riverside as a member & chairman of the Board of Zoning Appeals & he started the Tax Appeals Board. He then was elected in 2003 to the Riverside City Council, was elected Mayor in 2007, & was named by Sinclair as the Outstanding Government Leader in 2009.
Johnie's greatest love was volunteering where he felt he was needed. He was a past chairman of the Riverside Community Festival, a member of the Riverside Chamber of Commerce, Riverside Seniors, & Riverside Historical Society.
Johnie enjoyed fishing, hunting, & motorcycling.
Johnie is survived by his wife of 44 years, Georgette B. Doan; sisters Mary Jean Howard, Cynthiana, KY, Joanice Dixon, Orange City, FL; brother Daniel William Doan, Lubbock, TX, Bennie Lee Doan, Georgetown, KY, Grant Wayne Doan, Dover, Delaware; godson Jeff Atkinson, Dayton; two chocolate labs Maco & Belle; three alley cats Link, Cali, & Mr. Big. He was preceded in death by his sister Donna G. Coker.
Visitation will be held from 12-4pm, Sat, April 17 at NEWCOMER FUNERAL HOME, 4104 Needmore Rd, where Memorial Services will be held at 4pm on Sat. It was Johnie's wishes for no flowers, please send donations to the Riverside Community Festival Corporation, PO Box 31305, Riverside, OH 45437.
