John Leon Scroggins

May 27, 1932 — December 28, 2024

Kettering, Ohio

John L. (Jack) Scroggins, age 92, of Kettering, OH died on December 28, 2024. He was born in Alexandria, IN on May 27, 1932, but grew up in Spiceland, IN. He was preceded in death by his parents John and Blanche (Hayes) Scroggins of Spiceland, IN and his wife Mary (Moore) Scroggins. He is survived by daughter Cris (Gary) King, granddaughter Mollie (Chip) Fisher, and grandson Dillon King of Dayton, OH, son Tim (Annette Hare) Scroggins, grandsons Kyle, Drew, and Tyler Scroggins of San Antonio, TX and 2 great-grandsons Finn and Conor.

John graduated from Spiceland, IN High School in 1950 and Purdue University in 1955. After serving in the U.S. Army, John was fortunate to serve over 37 years with six U.S. Department of Defense contractors in the development and implementation of computerized Command, Control, Communications and Intelligence systems. He often said that he felt like he never left active duty with the military. After retirement, he stayed busy writing for 3 newspapers. He also volunteered for the Red Cross and then for the City of Kettering, OH until 2017 when he was forced to "retire" again due to health reasons. He often referred to volunteerism as his "life support system", particularly 20 years volunteering with Kettering.

John resided in Independent Living at Brookdale Kettering the last 7 years and was well-loved by the staff and residents there. He thoroughly enjoyed living there, and especially the food! He also loved the weekly happy hours and serving on the Resident Council. The family would like to thank all of the wonderful staff who helped care for him.

John enjoyed listening to music, watching college sports, and following the Cincinnati Reds. He like Stroh's beer and an occasional scotch. He also loved a good debate on almost any topic. He was lucky to still be sharp and have his full mental capacity at the age of 92! His son Tim will miss their daily phone calls.

John's memory will live on through the countless lives he touched and he will be very missed. A private ceremony will be held for his family and he will be buried at Dayton National Cemetery. The family requests that donations be given to Dayton Children's Hospital in lieu of flowers.
