John Vernon Martin

John Vernon Martin passed away at his home in Dayton, Ohio on October 17, 2023 at 8:15 am from stage 4 lung cancer. John was 77 years old at the time of his passing.
Preceding John in death were his parents: Mary Jane Martin (Young) and Woodrow Clyde Martin; brother, James C. Martin; sister, Helen Gilbert; nephew, Richard A. Gilbert; and son, John Vernon Martin, Jr.
John is survived by his wife, Dona Kathleen Martin (Welch); son, Michael E. Martin (Rene); daughter, Stephanie Jaramillo (Tony); grandchildren: Brandon A. Jaramillo (Amanda), Michael K. Martin (Karissa), Kristopher J. Martin, Ashley R. Martin, Thomas J. Martin and Gabriel Brown; nephew, James K. Welch; great-grandson, Everett M. Martin; sisters: Linda Rhodes (Don) and Betty Martin; brother, Robert Martin (Diane) as well as several nieces and nephews.
John was in the Marine Corps for 30 years. He graduated from UNC Wilmington with a Criminal Justice degree and worked for the Burgaw Correctional Facility in North Carolina, as well as Monday Correctional Facility in Dayton, Ohio after retiring from the Marine Corps. John loved to read; one of his favorite authors was Edgar Allen Poe. John also enjoyed watching Westerns on TV; he liked Laramie, Gunsmoke, and Cheyenne to name a few.
As we mourn the passing of John, let us also celebrate the life that he lived. John was a very giving and caring person who will be truly missed. May John rest in peace.
Visitation will be held from 2-3 pm on Thursday, October 26, 2023 at Newcomer Funeral Home, North Chapel, 4104 Needmore Road, where the funeral service will take place at 3:00 pm. A graveside service with military honors will take place at 10:00 am on Friday, October 27, 2023 at Dayton National Cemetery. The funeral procession will form at Newcomer Funeral Home, North Chapel at 9:15 am.
