John William Hawkins Sr.

John William Hawkins Sr., age 99, of Dayton, left this earth on June 6, 2023. He was born on October 19, 1923 in Salisbury, North Carolina to Carl and Mary Hawkins.
John served his country overseas during World War II by enlisting in the United States Army. He was a brick mason who loved to fish and play cards.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Helen D. Hawkins; his parents, Carl & Mary Hawkins; his grandson, Lionell Hawkins; his siblings: Carl Hawkins Jr., Nehemiah Hawkins, Leonard Hawkins, Henry Hawkins, Berthina Hawkins, Beulah Campbell, Yvonne Holmes, and Lois Patterson.
He is survived by his children: Helen JoAnn Hawkins, John Hawkins Jr., Phyllis Hawkins, Donetta (Alvin) Evans, and Beverly Hawkins; sister Priscilla Hawkins; grandchildren: Daria, Aaron, Brian, Sean (Tasha), Roy, Toya, John (Tonya), Niva, Janah (Jahmel); a host of great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
A viewing will be held from 11:00am to 12:00pm on Saturday, June 17, 2023 at Harvest Grove Baptist Church, 3323 Highview Hills, in Dayton, Ohio. The funeral service will begin at 12:00pm, officiated by Rev. Jackson.
John will be laid to rest with his wife at Dayton National Cemetery at 9:00am on Thursday, June 22, 2023.
