John Darius Halley, age 70 of Dayton, Ohio passed away Saturday, August 13, 2022 peacefully surrounded by his wife, children and family.
John was born on April 13, 1952 in Gallipolis, Ohio. He was preceded in death by his parents Darius Virgil and Bertis Joanna (Butcher) Halley and niece Leanna Marie (Criner) Bowen. John always remembered his Gallipolis roots, enjoyed visiting often and sharing his memories growing up there.
A 1970 graduate of Gallia Academy, John attended the University of Rio Grande and The Ohio State University. During this period, on the other side of the Ohio River, John met the love of his life, Brenda Sue (Stover) Halley, of Point Pleasant, West Virginia. They were married December 24, 1973. John honorably served in the United States Air Force from 1973 to 1997 and supported operations overseas with assignments to the Pacific Air Forces Command in the Philippines and later, to the contingency hospital operations in Germany. His distinguished military career concluded at Wright Patterson Air Force Base, OH, where he retired after 24 years of faithful service. Upon retiring from the military, he utilized his expertise in the civilian sector as he continued to work in the Bio Medical field until his passing.
John loved to cook for his family, whether it was his famous spaghetti sauce or his staple bean soup and cornbread. Every week he would cook a meal and have the family over for "Sunday Dinner", a proud tradition he created and something for which the family is eternally thankful. He was also an avid Ohio State Buckeyes fan, having all of his children attend college there. He especially enjoyed poking fun at his son in law for being from "that state up North".
John took pride in the fact that he outlived his medically predicted life expectancy, after getting diagnosed with Pulmonary Fibrosis in 2015. During the past year, he battled lung cancer, underwent chemotherapy and was in remission.
But of all of his accomplishments in life, being a husband, father and papa were his greatest. He never missed an opportunity to brag about his kids and grandkids of whom he was extremely proud of.
John is survived by his wife of 49 years, Brenda Sue (Stover) Halley; son John Darius (Anthony) Halley Jr.; daughters Jessica Sue Halley (Andrew) Boeke and Megan Joanna Halley (Danny) Lalka; sisters Linda Lee Halley (Ervin) Criner and Diana Kay Halley (Charles) Raming; grandchildren Halley Rose Boeke, Stella Marie Boeke, Kellan Andrew Darius Boeke, Evelyn May Lalka, and Noah Lee Darius Lalka; nephew Daniel Curtis Criner; grandnephews William Lee Bowen and Nicholas James Patrick Bowen and devoted family member, Kevin M. Thomas.
There will be a celebration of life held privately with family.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to The Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation, in John's honor.
