John Edwin Franklin Gilbert

May 2, 1940 — December 19, 2018

John Edwin Franklin Gilbert, age 78 of Huber Heights, passed away peacefully on December 19, 2018. John was born in Dayton, Ohio to the late Earl and Myrtle Gilbert. He graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1959. After graduation, John enlisted in the United States Navy. He faithfully and honorably served his country from 1960 - 1963. After his service, John went on to work at Wright Patterson Air Force Base as a civil servant, he retired after 30+ years of loyal work for the government.

John was a skilled pool player and enjoyed watching horse races. He loved to spend time outdoors, walking, fishing, and spending time with his friends and family. John was a devoted brother and uncle. He took great pride in his nieces and nephews. John was a caring, kind, and compassionate brother, uncle, and friend. He will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him.

In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his brother, Malcolm Gilbert; and sister, Twyla Messer.

John leaves to cherish his memory, brother, Morry (Charlotte) Gilbert; sister, Jan Ludwig; nieces and nephews, Richard Gilbert, David Gilbert, Michael (Belinda) Gilbert, Derek Gilbert, Denise (Tom), Kelly Gilbert, Linc Gilbert, Michelle O'Dell, Megan Blades, and Bridget O'Dell; a host of great-nieces and nephews; and many dear friends.

A graveside service and Naval honors will be held on Friday, January 4, 2019 at 1:45pm at Dayton National Cemetery.
