Joan Burns

Burns, Joan (MacKinnon) was born October 30, 1922 in Bruce County, Ontario, Canada to the late Betty and Archie MacKinnon, and she finished this life's journey on Sunday, September 2, 2007. Joan was preceded in death by her husband Joseph Burns who died in 1973, her parents, a brother (Murray), and favorite aunt (Sister Mary Patrick). She graduated from St. Michael's Hospital School of Nursing, Toronto, Ontario in 1944. She worked primarily at St. Elizabeth Hospital and the University of Dayton Health Center. Above all, she was a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She is survived by one brother, George (Joan) of Ontario, Canada and the nine children who survive her: James of Dayton, Joe of Charlotte, NC, Brian (Sharon) of Dayton, Barbara (Bill) Sayer of Dayton, Teresa of Dayton, Tom (Kathy) of London, Ontario, Joanne Burns (Pete Zawaski) of Pine Bush, NY, Christine (Charlie) Middleton of Beavercreek, Mary (Rita Mussachia) of Dayton. She also leaves 21 special grandchildren: Charlie Middleton, Elizabeth (John) Rhoads, Molly, Katie, and Tom Middleton, Naomi (Greg) Hambleton-Patterson, David (Margaret) Hambleton, Sara Hambleton (Santos Arias), Brian (Danielle), Eddie (Rihannon), and Charles (Sadie) Burns, Claire and Robin Burns, Tara (John) Gregory, Amos Suchak, Meghan, Andrew (Michelle), Emily, (Andy), and Will Sayer, and Patrick and Lauren Burns. She also has 14 great-grandchildren. Visitation service will be held at Newcomer Funeral Home, 3940 Kettering Blvd on Wed. September 5, 2007 from 5-8 p.m. A Celebration Mass of Joan's life will be held at St. Anthony Catholic Church on Thursday September 6, 2007 at 10:30 a. m. Donations may be made to Hospice of Dayton, to whose staff we send special thanks, or to any of mom's favorite charities: Dayton Right to Life, Elizabeth's New Life Center, or St. Vincent DePaul Society.
