Joan L. Atkinson

Joan L. Bergman Atkinson, age 91, of Kettering, Ohio, passed away on June 26, 2022 at Hospice of Butler and Warren Counties.

Joan was born on May 21, 1931 to Christian and Mary (Fenton) Bergman in Dayton, Ohio. She graduated from Dayton's Wilbur Wright High School in 1949. Following high school, Joan enrolled in Jewish Hospital's School of Nursing (Cincinnati) and graduated in 1952. She started her nursing career as an Emergency Room Nurse at Kettering Memorial Hospital. For 50 years, she continued caring for others—primarily in nursing home facilities.

Over the years, Joan kept in contact with her high school and nursing school friends by attending numerous reunions. Joan enjoyed reading and music. She played the violin and piano and enjoyed singing with Memorial Presbyterian Church's (Dayton) choir. As a long-time member of Memorial Presbyterian Church, she served in multiple roles including being a Deacon.

Joan's greatest joy was her three sons--Christopher (Lucy) Atkinson, David (Lynn) Atkinson, and Todd Atkinson (Raminta Juliano). She was a doting grandmother to her three granddaughters, Lauren (Eddie Roscher) Atkinson, Katie (Corey) Atkinson Smith, Elena Atkinson and two grandsons, Cody (Courtney) Atkinson and Tyler Atkinson. Joan was thrilled at the addition of her great-grandchildren—Vivien Roscher and newest arrival, Gaven Roscher.

Visitation will be held 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM with a memorial service beginning at 2:00 PM on Friday, July 29th at Newcomer's Kettering Chapel, 3940 Kettering Blvd., Kettering, OH 45430.
