James Sylvester "Jim" Phipps, or "Uncle Ves" to many, died peacefully at home in Centerville, Ohio on June 16th just moments before Father's Day at the age of 90.
Jim is survived by his devoted wife of 66 years, Marianne Phipps; sons, Mike Phipps, Steve Phipps, and Mark Phipps; daughter, Shari Weadick; grandchildren, Lanham Phipps, Sierra Phipps, Felicia Imbrogno, Sarah Nichols, Tricia Thompson, Stephen Phipps, John Owen Phipps, Paul Weadick, and Brenna Weadick; great-grandchildren Harper Imbrogno, Stella Imbrogno, and Matthew Thompson; as well as numerous other relatives and friends.
Jim was born on July 30th, 1927 in Lucasville, Ohio. He was raised on Big Run Road by his grandmother, Jane Jenkins. Jim enlisted in the Navy at age 18 and served in WWII. Following his time in the service, he graduated from the Ohio State University with a degree in civil engineering. Jim worked as an engineer in the steel industry in Middletown, Ohio and Canton, Ohio. He married Marianne in 1952, and the couple welcomed four children. Jim was a Believer and follower of Jesus Christ. He valued and cherished his family and leaves a legacy of godly leadership and fatherhood.
Jim retired from engineering in 1988 and enjoyed travelling all over the United States with Marianne in their Airstream trailer. In 1991, they purchased a mobile home in Lake Bonnet Village in Avon Park, Florida where Jim and Marianne spent the winter months for over 25 years. He was a member of the church at Lake Bonnet and served as the head elder for 10 years.
Jim was an avid outdoorsman and fisherman. He also enjoyed photography and painting scenic pictures of favorite places that he had travelled. He will be remembered as a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather whose love for God and commitment to family will continue to influence future generations.
