Janice Audrey Helms
June 24, 1926 — April 12, 2022
Janice Audrey (nee: Sohl) Helms, 95, was welcomed into heaven on April 12, 2022 and into the loving arms of her husband, Kenneth Vail Helms (Ken), who preceded her by twenty-four years. They were the love of each other's lives for over 51 years.
She will be lovingly remembered by her children: Richard (Susan), Donna (Sherwood), Robin (Jeffrey); Her grandchildren: Matthew (Jenni), Nathan (Sally), Kristie (Glenn), Sherwood (DiAnna), Amy (Adam), Janice aka Janice, Jr. (Kevin), Laurie (Dan); Her great grandchildren: Garrett (who preceded her to heaven), Wesli, Anna Vail, Lucienne, Olive, Eliot, Ramona, David.
She also leaves: Her brother Donald (Jean), sister-in-law Margie, niece Cheryl, nephew Rorey (Patty) and their daughters Makayla and Amanda; Step grandchildren Veronica (Max) and Jeremy (Jessica) and their daughters Emma and Ella; A niece Jane (Bradley) and nephew Karl; Cousins Susie, Bob and their extended families; An 'adopted', fun-loving and outrageous grandson, Shaun.
Janice was born of the late Frederick and Maude Sohl and raised in Brooklyn and Queens, New York. She graduated with honors from Hunter College High School and Adelphi School of Nursing in New York and enjoyed a varied nursing career in hospitals and physician offices first in New York and then in Ohio, following Ken's career. She was also a member of the United States Cadet Nurse Corps. She later enjoyed her retirement years at the beach in St. Augustine, Florida.
Throughout her life, she enjoyed cooking, crosswording, knitting, golfing, bird and people watching. She loved many fur friends (guinea pigs, rabbits, dogs, cats). She and Ken often welcomed a guest to their home (actually, a bedroom and usually for several months at a time). Not unlike her daughter and son-in-law, Robin and Jeffrey, who graciously shared their home with her during her later years. She always put her family first!
Being a voracious reader, it is fitting to note that the pages of Janice Helms' book have been well written— and she will be remembered as one of THE absolute best chapters.
We think she'd love for you to honor her by eating a hot dog or a chicken burrito and a caramel apple with nuts and by rooting for your favorite baseball team (her treasured past time!)
We are so proud that Day City Hospice was a part of Janice's care team at the end of her life. So grateful for the compassion and kindness shown.
