James Russel Montgomery, Sr., age 101, passed away on June 29, 2024. He was born in Dayton on January 17, 1923 to the late John C. Montgomery & Emma (Peterson) Montgomery.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Maurece, Dave, Don, Bob “Moon”, John Jr., Rosemary “Med”, and Dick; and his son, Christopher Montgomery.
James was a dedicated fireman for the Dayton Fire Department for 29 years. He was a talented carpenter, and built several homes including the one his children grew up in.
James courageously served in the U.S. Navy during WWII aboard the USS Kane at the Battle of Okinawa. After the war he attended the Dayton Art Institute. He was a talented lifelong artist in both oil and pencil. James was an avid golfer, setting the record for most rounds played at Kittyhawk Golf Course.
He demonstrated that love and generosity towards his children, grandchildren, and family members meant the most to him.
When asked to describe his longevity, he would say work the "right amount", rest the "right amount", eat "halfway right", plus have "a lot of luck".
James is survived by his children, David (Sandra) Montgomery, James (Joy) Montgomery, Jr., Scott Montgomery, Mary (Steve) Yarmosky; grandchildren, David, Molly, Mike (Katie), Emily, Melissa (Andy), Katie (Denny), Megan (Matt), Ryan, Elise, Alena, Jessie (Zach), and Alex (Stoner); five great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and many other relatives and friends.
Our family expresses our gratitude to cousins Susan and Sally for three years of loving assistance to Dad.
