James Jolly Mischler Jr.

April 16, 1930 — May 11, 2014

Mischler, James Jolly, Jr., 84, inveterate political letter-writer, perennial Ohio State football fan, and master joke-teller has died at Hospice of Dayton of colon cancer. He passed peacefully surrounded by his family. He was born on April 16, 1930 to James Mischler, Sr. and Margaret (Fladd) Mischler. He grew up in Troy, Ohio with his brother and sister, excelling in sports and drama at Troy High School. He went on to graduate from The Ohio State University with both a bachelor's and master's degree in business. He also completed a tour of duty with the US Navy during the Korean War, aboard the USS Northampton. In 1956, he married the former Ann Focke and the two made their home in Oakwood, raising 5 children. Jim worked for NCR, McCall Corporation and Miami Valley Hospital in addition to others. He was a member of many fundraising boards and professional organizations, particularly relishing his association with the Phi Delta Theta fraternity. Among his many charitable activities, he sponsored a child in Guatemala for many years through CFCA, enjoying the letters he received from her. He was a generous and intelligent man with wide-ranging interests; for example, his favorite musical artists were Rachmaninoff and ABBA. He will be greatly missed. As he grew older, his Catholic faith became more and more important to him. Our family is indebted to Fr. Joseph Goetz for his wise counsel during a difficult time. Likewise, we are grateful to Miami Valley Hospital and Hospice of Dayton for the excellent care he received.

Jim is survived by his brother, Harland (Jean) of Florida, sister, Mary Barickman, of Kansas, 5 children: Jim III, Bill, Dave (Mande), Fred (Lisa), and Margo (Jim), 6 grandchildren: Gavin, Meriel, Lucy, Rose, Bram & Phoebe; and many nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Wednesday, May 14, 2014 at Riverside Cemetery in Troy. Memorials to CFCA (www.hopeforafamily.org), Hospice of Dayton (www.hospiceofdayton.org), or a charity of your choice in memory of James. Arrangements in care of Newcomer Funeral Home – South Chapel.
