James E. Hicks, Jr.

August 26, 1924 — May 2, 2018

James Edward Hicks, Jr., 93, of Dayton, Ohio died at 11:15pm on Wed. May 2, 2018. He was born in Harrisburg, PA on Aug. 26, 1924 to the late James E. and Eva Harrington Hicks. James joined the Army and served in France in WWII. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal of meritorious service, the Combat Infantry Badge and two Purple Hearts all in combat. He graduated from Loyola High School and finished his law degree (J.D.) from the University of Maryland.

James is survived by his children, James Hicks (Cindy), Robert Hicks, Judith Hicks and Robert Doyle (Anne); his sister, Janet Tighe of Baltimore, Maryland; eleven grandchildren, Amanda Hicks, Heather Stauffer, Heath Stauffer, Katherine Hicks Joseph (Robert) Tara Hicks Pope (Sam), Michael Reeves Hicks (Amy), Brian Anthony Valerio (Kristina) Rachael Valerio Cruser (Eric), Laura Ellen Valerio, Nathan Hicks, and Carly Hicks; and 8 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 32 years, Charlotte Doyle Hicks; son, Capt. Paul Hicks, USMC; granddaughter, Melissa Anne Doyle; his sister, Patricia Brembeck (Jack) of California and brother-in-law, Rudy Tighe.

James worked for many years, in sales, for Ohio Bell. He moved to Rhode Island in the late '60's. There he worked in home improvement. He met and married Charlotte Doyle in Narragansett, RI. During the late '70's, James moved with his wife, to Gastonia, North Carolina. He continued to work in home improvements in North Carolina and then in sales for the Gastonia Gazette until his late '80's.

He was a member of Saint Michael Parish for 30 years and was an active participant and achieved Fourth Degree in the Knights of Columbus. He was also devoted to the Wounded Warriors.

Family will receive friends Saturday May 12, 2018 from 2 p.m. until the Celebration of Life service at 3 p.m. at Newcomer North Chapel, 4104 Needmore Rd., Dayton, Deacon Ralph O'Bleness, from Saint Helens Parish, officiating. Following the services, friends and family are invited to gather to his daughter, Judith Hicks home to celebrate his life.


Burial with full military honors will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, May 14, 2018 at the Dayton National Cemetery. 4400 West 3rd Street, Dayton.

Memorials may be made to the Dayton VA Medical Center, 4100 W. Third St., Bldg. 320 NH2-Hospice, Dayton, OH 45428 or the James' favorite charity, The Wounded Warriors.
