MSgt James B. Wyburn, USAF, Retired
James B. (Jim) Wyburn, 67, passed away August 4, 2015 at Wright Patterson AFB Medical Center from pulmonary complications following surgery. At his side were his wife, Denise, and daughters Heidi Bringhurst, Lindsay Wyburn, and Jenna Dowler. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Kody Fleming, Maya Dowler, and Andee Dowler and son-in-law Erik Dowler.
Jim was born in Cleveland, Ohio and graduated from John Marshall High School. He joined the Army National Guard in 1968. After four years in the Guard, he enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he served for over 20 years, from Vietnam through Desert Storm, retiring from active duty as a Master Sergeant in 1992. A proud and much-decorated veteran, he enjoyed a varied career ranging from demolitions and heavy machinery operation in the Army National Guard, through maintaining fighter jets and co-writing programs for computerized weapons systems. After retiring from active duty, Jim obtained degrees in computer information systems and in accounting, and worked until 2008 as a software engineer on Y2K conversions and legacy systems for several civilian companies and military contractors.
Jim was athletic, playing softball, bowling, and regularly playing golf until his health made it impossible to do so. He loved his family and his pets foremost, and after them, his country and the Air Force, which had been such a large part of his life. He was an avid reader, and his favorite genres were WWII history and anything to do with the Titanic. He loved playing trivia, even when he got the answers wrong, because he always learned something from the process. He was a great cook, and the grandkids always liked his tuna casserole and Amish popcorn the best. If Jim could have adopted every stray cat who came to feed on our deck, he would have, along with the raccoons, the possums, and the squirrels. He never met an animal he didn't love, and who didn't love him right back.
A memorial Honor Guard ceremony will be held Saturday, August 15, 2015 at 2pm at Newcomer Funeral Home, 4104 Needmore Road in Huber Heights. Jim strongly supported animal rescue organizations and military organizations. We request that no flowers be sent. Instead, please contribute in Jim's memory to the ASPCA (www.aspca.org/donate) or to the Wounded Warrior Project (www. Woundedwarriorproject.org).
