Irmgard J. Powell

April 26, 1932 — November 12, 2017

Irmgard J Powell was born in Berlin Germany and Immigrated to the United States in 1960.

She was a seamstress in Germany before meeting her husband and coming to the United States. She loved sewing and creating beautiful clothing for herself and others throughout her life.

She spent the majority of her years living in Huber Heights, raising her children and forming lifelong friendships with her neighbors who became extended family.

Irmgard worked as a Tupperware saleswoman, and then became an AT&T international operator. She received several awards and letters from grateful families for her assistance with reaching overseas loved ones. Although the hours were challenging, she found helping people very rewarding.

As a child she developed a passionate love of the opera and the ballet that continued all her life. She was a member of the Dayton Opera Guild where she helped put on their yearly fashion show combining her two passions, opera and fashion. Irmgard also loved art, traveling and returning to Europe to visit her family.

One of her proudest accomplishments came when she decided to journal her childhood story, and then turned it into a book, "Don't let them see you cry, overcoming a Nazi childhood". Her book took her on a journey of self-discovery, speaking at local book clubs and schools meeting wonderful people who would go on to become lifelong friends. She was also invited to an NPR Radio interview. Her family is forever grateful for the legacy of her story in print.

Irmgard's love of her children and grandchildren, her passion for living life to its fullest, and her resilience when faced with life's challenges made an impression on all who knew her.

Irmgard loved dogs, especially her dog Rusty who was her faithful friend in her retirement years.

She was greatly loved by her family and will be forever in their hearts. She was preceded in death by her mother, Elfriede Conti; father, Leonardo Conti; brother, Fredrick "Fritz" Conti; sister, Gisela Botts; and grandson, Andrew Cross.

She is survived by her son, Royce (Melissa) Cross; daughter, Corinne (Kim) Cross; grandchildren, Ryan Cross, Benjamin Cross, Craig (Dana) Martin, Chris (Jessica) Martin; great grandson, Emerson Martin; and several other relatives and special friends.
