Hugh grew up on the North side of Indianapolis attending St. Joan of Arc & Cathedral Highschool. He was very active in the CYO which left him with many happy memories & his love for competition. He wrestled throughout high school earning many awards & trophies, always prouder when his grandparents from Scotland were there to witness his greatness. Hugh embraced his Scottish heritage with pride.
After visiting family in Scotland, he was presented with his Kilt, wearing it as often as he could. So handsome in it.
Then it was off to Butler University, graduating with a degree in microbiology & as a proud member of PHI DELTA THETA.
He took his degree along with the experience & leadership skills he learned with the fraternity & applied for his first management job with Steak & Ale Indy. He was hooked on hospitality, & for the next 30 plus years, he was a restaurateur.
Hugh hired me at Steak & Ale Dayton Ohio & we married in 1981. Hugh was transferred to South Bend, Cincinnati, Delaware & Minnesota. After 11 years he left Steak & Ale & we moved back to Indy. He spent 5 years with Cattle Company Greenwood, as GM working with some incredible people. In 1991, he became a managing partner for Outback Steakhouse 86th St. Indy. He was with Outback for 10 years working with great people who meant so much to him.
Together in 2002, we opened C.R. Heroes in Fishers Indiana. Three long years later, Steph, our manager & one of our Outback stars we brought with us, bought it from us & it thrives today because of her hard work.
That was one of Hugh's qualities. He hired great people. Every company in every state, great, good-looking people.
Not ready to retire, Hugh started Weemo Lawns. Luckily, Tyler, another Outback star, wanted to work with Hugh again. When Hugh was ready to retire in 2018 Tyler bought the company from Hugh. Weemo is still mowing lawns in Indy today.
One of Hugh's most cherished accomplishments was being involved in the recolonization of Phi Delta Theta at Butler. From construction to food service, Hugh gave back as an alumnus. A true labor of love, with an incredible outcome. He loved Butler & Phi Delta Theta.
He found time to play a little golf, go boating & play some cards. We spent a couple of years in an RV traveling to the beaches of Florida with parks directly on the ocean. It was a great time every time & he tackled the duties of living on the road like a champ. Whatever he did in life he gave 100%. Hugh leaves behind many loved ones on both sides of our family & I know we all will miss him. We already do.
Thank you to Dr. Neel for his compassion & forethought in Hugh's care. Thank you to Hospice for the loving care they showed him for 11 months. Not just him, but me as well. They all said how pleasant he was, even though he was in pain. His smile was still infectious. Thank you to my sisters, nieces & nephews who came whenever we needed help. ALS is a thief that takes away hope, but we pray for a cure every day.
Hugh loved his family. He loved dogs, but most of all, he loved me.
We will be celebrating Hugh’s life in Dayton & Indianapolis.
Liz
