ROSS, Howard C. "Pappy", age 85, passed away Saturday, September 25, 2010. He is preceded in death by his parents, Mary and Leslie; brother, Paul, and son, Ronald Ross.
Howard is survived by his wife of 45+ years, Norma; children, Richie and Robynn; 4 grandchildren; 1 great grandchild; nephew, Richard G. Ross, and many family and friends.
He was born in Dayton, OH, attended Huffman Elementary and Wilbur Wright High Schools. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy on Mar. 31, 1942, served in World War II, saw duty in the Atlantic and Pacific campaigns, was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Medal and the Purple Heart, and was honorably discharged on Oct. 8, 1945. After the Navy, he returned to Dayton, OH, later joined the Dayton Police Dept. and earned the department's highest award, the Distinguished Medal of Valor. After serving more than 25 years, he retired on Dec. 31, 1976. He then provided security for the Arcade and Convention Center.
Family will receive friends from 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm on Thursday, September 30, 2010 at Newcomer Funeral Home, 3380 Dayton-Xenia Rd., Beavercreek. Services will follow immediately after. Memorial committal services will be held at the family's convenience. In lieu of flowers, it was Howard's wish that donations be made to the DPD FOP Retirees.
