Hermine Evalena Collington was born on May 24, 1936 to Hezekiah and Zylpha Collington in Jamaica, West Indies. She was the first of five children born to that union. She became affectionately known by family and friends as Stermine or Daisy. To her five biological children and her adopted daughter, she was simply known as "Mom."
Mom and her siblings lost their mother at the tender age of 12. She was raised by her father and maternal grandmother.
Hermine graduated from the Enfield school system, St. Mary, Jamaica.
Upon graduation she taught at her Alma Mata as a pupil teacher for approximately two years.
She was a brilliant orator, intelligent, knowledgeable, organized, classy and strong-willed lady.
Hermine moved to St. Andrew where she pursued a nursing career,
studied and trained with some of the most brilliant and prestigious
doctors of her time at the University of The West Indies, and The
Kingston Public Hospital. She possessed a superb knowledge of nursing
and midwifery.
In addition to her nursing career, Hermine was an expert seamstress,
designing and making ladies dresses and wedding dresses, bed spreads
and draperies.
Mom enjoyed attending church and was well versed in quoting scriptures, idioms and poetry. She also enjoyed playing the piano, singing, crafts, floral arrangements, gardening, and cooking. She was an exceptional home maker and hostess.
Hermine was blessed with five wonderful children whom she loved
very much and was extremely proud of.
Before she made her transition,I was blessed with the privilege of praying the sinner's prayer with her. Therefore, if we are faithful to God I believe we will see our mom, sister, aunt, grandmother, and friend, and will never part again.
Hermine was preceded in death by her baby brother Lascells
Collington six weeks ago and a sister Ita Collington-Duffus over three
decades ago.
She is survived by her five children: Pauline (Noel), Stafford
(Peaches), Richard (Lorraine), Robert (Viola) and Princess; grandchildren:
Natoya, Andrae, Nigel, Mychal, Chrystal, Richima, Britney Kia, Kandice
and RJ; adopted daughter, Shellene; brothers: Leo and Grandville; sisters:
Neoris, Yvonne, and Esther; aunts: Cecelia, Laidley, and Eloise Cripps, a
host of nieces and nephews and cousins.
