Herman Detrick Othersen, age 95 of Beavercreek, Ohio passed into Eternal Rest on July 16, 2015 of natural causes at Wood Glen Nursing home, Centerville, OH. Herman entered the Civil Conservation Corp in 1936. He then enlisted in the Army in 1942, fought in the Battle of the Bulge and was taken captive by the Nazi's and held as a POW in 3 different camps from January 1945 until the end of the war. Upon Honorable Discharge, Herman returned to Dayton and was employed by Delco for 42 years as a machinist.
Herman loved riding motorcycles and rode on many bike tours. He rode various Harleys for 70 years. In his spare time, he enjoyed bowling, golf and gardening. After retirement, he and wife Judy traveled extensively. Above all, he enjoyed taking care of his home and family.
Herman was born October 25, 1919 in Brookville, OH to John and Sarah Medlar Othersen. He was preceded in death by his parents and 4 brothers. His wife of 50 years, Judy Elam Othersen passed in 2005 and son John Enoch Othersen in 1966. Survivors are 2 daughters Sara Kristine Othersen Harwood and Spouse Robert; Virginia Lynn Othersen Haskell and spouse Warren; and son Charles Detrick (Rick) Othersen and spouse Debbie. Grandchildren: Jessica Harwood, Lauren Harwood Williford and spouse Tommy; Sara Haskell Marchisseau and spouse Guillaume, Abby Haskell and Mac Haskell; Jenna Othersen and Wilson Othersen. He loved and was loved by his family and will be greatly missed.
Visitation will be held at Newcomer Funeral Home Beavercreek Chapel on Saturday July 25 from 10-11am and the Memorial service from 11am-12pm. Interment will immediately follow at Valley View Memorial Gardens in Xenia. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial gifts be made to Hospice of Dayton.
