Herman Easterly

October 24, 1924 — November 11, 2021

Herman Travis Easterly, 97, World War 2 Navy veteran, died Tuesday, 11 November 2021.

He was born in Oak Grove TN on 24 October 1924, to Eunice Ann (Smith) Easterly and John Henry Easterly. He was the 5th of 9 children.

He loved the Lord, his family, fishing, hunting, fishing, gardening (and canned his harvest every year well into his 90s), working on cars, and...fishing. There wasn't an engine he couldn't fix. To his wife's annoyance, you could often find an engine in the midst of repair somewhere in the Easterly home. He loved to "tinker" and at age 97, was in the midst of plumbing projects, and working on his riding lawnmower. He loved to read, and never stopped learning. In his house, we found books on Higher Math, Plane Geometry, History and World War 2.

An avid fisherman, fishing was a family adventure. Our dad always baited our mother's hook until the time came when Herman decided his eldest daughter, Diana, could take over that role. When Diana complained, he said "why do you think we had you girls?"

Herman settled in Dayton, Ohio after World War 2, and was employed as a roofer for several years, then as a machinist with Frigidaire, then Chrysler Airtempt. He and some friends were at the public swimming pool, when the 3 handsome young men met 3 lovely young ladies. Our father said "I want the one in the cowboy hat." He and the young lady in the cowboy hat, Lura Aden Tabor, married four months later. They were married 38 years until her death in 1989.

Herman was a proud American, voted in every election, and encouraged the same in his children. He was a good man, generous to family and friends alike, honest, and embodied integrity and work ethic. He remained kind until the day he died.

He came from a strong, self sufficient family who survived much hardship, but stuck together. They also loved strong debate. If you put 3 Easterlys in a room, you can expect a spirited debate over something. As a child, he picked cotton, harvested fields for his grandmother, and was tasked with scavenging in the woods for edible greens, roots, e.t.c, when the family had no food.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lura; grandson Ryan Clithero; brothers Ambrose, Herbert and Hollis Easterly; sisters Jewell Easterly, Virgie Lewis, Hilda Rigby, and Jeane Thurman.

He was also preceded in death by good friends, Harry Bowman (a fellow "tinkerer"), Howard Mullins, and (brother in law) Kenneth Mullenix (Indianapolis IN.)

A small graveside memorial will be held, 2:00pm, Thursday, 18 November 2021, at Dayton Memorial Park on Dixie Drive in Dayton.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Herman Easterly's name to his favorite charities, Samaritan's Purse, the Red Cross, or a Veterans group, Honor Flight, Wounded Warrior Project Folds of Honor, e.t.c.

His daughters Diana, Vicki and June, would love if you'd share any stories or memories of our father with us.
