Helen Free, age 95, of Huber Heights, passed away on March 24, 2023 after a long fight with dementia.
Helen was the beloved wife of David Free for 58 years and much loved mother of Brenda (Rick) Gabriele, Larry (Tina) Looney and Robert Free, as well as, the cherished grandmother of Brian (Christie) Looney, Stephanie (William) Dill, Brian (Scarlett) Gabriele, Larry Looney II, Karen (Brice) Gharst, Mandy Looney and Matt (Nikki) Looney. She was also very proud of her 14 great-grandchildren. She's further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends that loved her very much.
Helen Free lived a full life and was known for her determination and strength. One of the family's favorite stories to share is how she was featured in the Dayton Newspaper at the age of 35 years old, for fighting off a mugger in a downtown parking garage with her high heel. She told the family that she "showed him a lesson".
Her family remembers her as gifted in so many ways. She loved cooking, gardening and she kept an immaculate house. She took pride in everything she owned and glowed when she showed you the latest project she creatively initiated. She made everyone feel safe and comfortable as soon as they stepped foot in her home.
Most of all, she loved her family and through her actions and never ending kindness, she leaves a legacy of love and joy. She will be dearly missed and forever in our hearts.
A celebration of Helen's life will be held from 5:00pm to 7:00pm on Wednesday, March 29, 2023 at Newcomer North Chapel, 4104 Needmore Road, in Dayton, Ohio, where a service will begin at 7:00pm. Helen will be laid to rest at a graveside service at 11:00am on Thursday, March 30, 2023 at Riverside Cemetery in Troy, Ohio.
