Grace Margaret Mckenzie

April 30, 1926 — November 14, 2020

Grace Margaret McKenzie, age 94, of Dayton, passed away on November 14, 2020, at Miami Valley Hospital South Hospital. Grace was born on April 30, 1926, in Hamilton, OH. She was the daughter of Henry and Lillian (Konrad) Johnson.

As she became of age, Grace went to work at Wright Patterson Air Force base where she met the love of her life, Henry "Mac" McKenzie. They would go on to be married on a beautiful Saturday afternoon on June 24, 1950, at St. Francis Catholic Church in Lebanon, OH. Together they began raising their family by giving birth to their baby girl, Linda. Later in 1966, Grace and Mac moved to Centerville and built their new home.

After Linda was born, Grace resigned her position at Wright Patt and focused on her family and her favorite hobby, genealogy. Grace was an excellent cook and could make anything from "scratch." She was especially known for her fried chicken, beef and noodles and pork chops. She was also an avid gardener and would raise her own fruits and vegetables that would ultimately end up in the dishes she would prepare for her family and friends. There was also her special time of the year, the process of canning and freezing her harvest. Grace was truly a "farmer" at heart. Her family would tease her by saying, you could take the girl out of the farm, but you couldn't take the farm out of the girl!

Grace is survived by her loving daughter, Linda Syguda of Columbus, OH; granddaughter, Jordan Syguda of Grandview, OH; grandson, Aaron (wife Megan) Syguda of Columbus, OH; and four nephews and their families.

Along with her parents, Grace was preceded in death by her husband, Henry "Mac" R. McKenzie; brothers, Henry Johnson and Joseph Johnson.

Graveside service will take place on Monday, November 23, 2020, at 1:00 pm in the St. Stephen's Cemetery, 1314 Greenwood Avenue, Hamilton, OH 45011, with Deacon Jeff Merrill officiating. Entombment will immediately follow the service.

The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, friends may make memorial contributions in Grace's name to her favorite institution, St. Jude's Children's Hospital.
