Wilmington

Gilbert John Wagner, lovingly known as "Gil," passed away on January 17, 2025, in Dayton, Ohio, leaving behind a legacy woven with kindness, humor, and dedication. Born on April 22, 1964, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Gil was a man of remarkable talents and an indomitable spirit.

Gil’s professional journey spanned an impressive 36 years at Wright Patterson Air Force Base. During his career, he worked on many projects, including the C-17, F-35, and F-15. His work was acknowledged with numerous awards and accolades throughout his distinguished career. Most impressive was his role as Chief Engineer on the F-15, which upon his retirement earned him a flight of appreciation. Gil approached each challenge with a driven mindset, exemplifying a perfectionist's touch, that shaped the success of many projects during his tenure.

Education played a crucial role in Gil's life. He proudly earned his Bachelor’s Degree from Parks College of St. Louis University, a place where he also met his beloved wife, Sue. He later pursued further education, achieving a Master’s Degree from Wright State University. His thirst for knowledge was paralleled only by the love and warmth he shared with those around him.

Not only a brilliant engineer, but Gil was also a man of varied interests and hobbies. His passion for music was evident in his skillful guitar playing, and he found joy in adventurous pursuits like scuba diving, camping, boating, and enjoying the great outdoors. He was an avid fan of rock concerts, with a special fondness for the music of the Scorpions and Rush. His friends and family will fondly remember his spontaneous sense of humor, often accompanied by his mischievous grin that would light up a room and bring laughter to all.

Gil was a dedicated family man. He is survived by his loving wife, Sue; his father, Gilbert "Gil" Wagner; and his cherished sisters, Debra (Don) Frazier and Linda (John) Pine. He also leaves behind his sister-in-law, Lynda (Charles H. Lange) Becker, and numerous nieces, nephews, family and friends. Gil was predeceased by his mother, Mary Wagner, whose love and guidance shaped the wonderful person he became.

As we reflect on Gil's life, we remember a man whose heart was as vast as his accomplishments. His ability to connect with others, his unwavering drive, and his gentle spirit enriched the lives of everyone fortunate enough to know him. He will be profoundly missed but will continue to live on in the hearts and memories of his family and friends.

A Celebration of his life will be held at a later date by the family.

"I'd like the memory of me to be a happy one,

I'd like to leave an afterglow of smiles when life is done.

I'd like to leave an echo whispering softly down the ways,

of happy times and laughing times and bright and sunny days.

I'd like the tears of those who grieve, to dry before the sun,

of happy memories that I leave when life is done."
