Gary L. Chapman, age78, passed on to his heavenly home on February 18, 2022. Corinthians 5:8 says, "We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord." We weren't ready to say good-bye, but rest assured that he is in the presence of the King of Kings, and one day we will see him again.
He was born to the late Erwin Lee and Ruthie Mae Chapman on May 13, 1943 in Oswego, New York. Soon after, the family moved to Dayton, Ohio, where they settled and called "home". In 1968, he married the late Nancy Jo Moses Chapman, and they had two daughters: Stephanie and Mechelle. Gary loved working on cars and creating the fastest hot rods of that era.
He gave his life to the Lord in 1977 and became a member of the great Church of God. He went on a few years later to get his minister's license with the Church of God (A.J. Tomlinson) in Cleveland, Tennessee. He preached in many states in his 40+ years of being a minister. He still, until his last breath, told us of the greatness, love, and mercy of Jesus. He loved the Lord and His church.
Gary has two daughters: Stephanie T. Chapman Story and Mechelle R. (Jeff) Chapman Harness; nine grandchildren: Ambrose Jessup Champan, Matthew D. (Nicole) Story, Dianna M. (Johnny) Sumner, Michael V. (Amanda) Story II, Rebekah Johnson, Marcus A. L. (Jessica) Story, Elizabeth Chapman, Emilee (Korey) Eskew, and Alyssa T. Chapman; and he was also blessed with 28 great-grandchildren: (Matthew) Sawyer & Bryar (Dianna) Kearsten, Parker, Teagen, Jaxton & Jade (Michael) Summer, Mikey III, Bailey Jo & Landon (Emilee) Evaylyn, Koralee & Dixie Jo (Marcus) Carson & Elias (Rebekah) Brody, Blake, Bailee & Brooklyn (Elizabeth) Olivia, Tylin, Charlsey & Chloe Mae (Alyssa) Camden, Cage, Casen & Kensley.
He loved his grandchildren and great-grandchildren very much. He taught his family about God's love and the importance of having a personal relationship with Jesus.
Papaw was our rock, our shelter from the storm when life was rough, and definitely very dear to each of our hearts. He had many dear friends & family members in which he though so much of. I wish I could list each one of you. We can just cherish all the great times and keep all those special moments in our hearts until we see him again one day.
A visitation will be held from 9:00am to 11:00am on Sunday, February 27, 2022 at Newcomer North Chapel, 4104 Needmore Road, Dayton, where a funeral service will begin at 11:00am.
