He graduated from South Hamilton High School in Jewell in 1967 and from Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa in 1971. He married his high school sweetheart, Amy Engelby in 1969.
Gail joined the United States Air Force in 1971 and served as a navigator on KC-135 tankers stationed with his family in Okinawa, Japan. From there Gail flew the AWACS with NATO forces in Munich, Germany. He worked in contracting at Wright Patterson Air Force Base and then served as an AFPRO commander on Long Island, NY. After a short assignment to Saudi Arabia, he finished his Air Force career at WPAFB as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1994. He then worked for MTC Technologies for a few years and retired again.
Gail was an avid golfer, restored a 1956 Chevy, and remodeled a kitchen and a bathroom at home. He enjoyed helping with the harvest in Iowa on the land he owned, and managed his family farmland for his siblings. He was most active playing guitar in several groups; a country duo, a rock and roll trio, a Dixieland band, the church praise band, and his rock band from the 60's. That last band, made up of relatives and friends, had several reunions and performances over the years which he thoroughly enjoyed.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Amy; son Aaron (Angie) and granddaughters, Caylie and Kristina; son David (Kate); brother, Brian Vaubel (Tiekka) and sisters Cynthia Vaubel and Gretchen Warn (Dave).
