Lumpkin, Frederick (Fred) Ross, age 91, peacefully transitioned home to be with the Lord on Sunday, March 12, 2023 with his family by his side. Fred was born in Dayton, Ohio on November 30, 1931, to the late James and Niccie Lumpkin. He was a proud Daytonian all of his life. He was a 1950 graduate of Dunbar High School.
After high school graduation, Fred worked at Delco. During the Korean War, he was drafted into the U.S. Army, from which he later received an honorable discharge. After returning from the Army, Fred went to work at the Gentile Air Force Depot, later known as DESC. He rose to a management position and retired in 1980 after 28 years of service.
In 1956, he met and married the woman who would become his wife and best friend for a lifetime, Marcella.
Fred was a faithful member of the Tabernacle Baptist Church for his entire life, following his parents who were some of the church's original members. He was a proud, longtime member of the Masonic Lodge.
Fred was a lifelong sports fan, but he really loved basketball; playing it, teaching it and talking x's and o's. He played on championship basketball teams for Gentile Air Force Depot/DESC in the late 1950's and early 1960's. Fred was also an avid bowler well up into his seventies. In later years, he enjoyed sharing stories about the athletic endeavors and successes of nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Fred was an avid music lover, with exceptional taste in all music, especially jazz. Fred could entertain people for hours with stories about great musicians of the past. He enjoyed working on cars, often with his family, and had many classic automobiles.
Fred was proceeded in death by his daughters, Carla and Karen Lumpkin; brothers Napoleon, Anderson (A.C.), James (J.Y.), Harold (Richard), Henry and Charles. He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years Marcella Lumpkin, daughter Betty Lumpkin; grandchildren Marchelle (Ed) Mucha, Eric Lumpkin and Ashley Jordan; great grandchildren Keryn Lumpkin-Mucha (Keith Cochran), Jaydin Ross Armstrong, My'Aire Collins; great-great grandchildren Olivia Lumpkin-Mucha and Ember Cochran, childhood friend Everett Smith, Sr. and a host of other relatives and friends.
A special thank you to the Team at Hospice of Dayton (nurse Laura Koch and assistant WC), Dr. Raman Khosla and D'Vonte Burton for the care provided to our beloved family member.
