Evelyn Harkleroad

May 10, 1934 — January 21, 2022

Evelyn Harkleroad (Compton), born May 10, 1934, daughter of Archibald and Minnie Compton, grew up in Englee, Newfoundland, Canada. She was the oldest of thirteen children. At the age of 18, she left home to work in St. John's, Newfoundland, where she met her beloved husband, Frank Harkleroad, who was in the United States Air Force and stationed at Pepperell Air Force Base.

They married on October 6, 1956, and she came to the United States where they started their family of four children: Gloria, William, Roland, and Brent, all residing in Ohio. In the following years, she worked as a nurse's aid at Seina Nursing Home in Dayton and Lathen Nursing Home in Bellefontaine, Ohio.

During their years in the military, she and her husband lived in the Philippines, Alaska, Texas, Pennsylvania, and Ohio. Over the years, she traveled with her husband until his passing in 2001. She was a member of the Huber Heights Church of the Nazarene until moving to Kettering in 1992, where she started attending Dayton Christian Union Church.

In addition to her parents and beloved husband, she is preceded in death by her aunts and uncles, her sister, Nora, her brother, Arch Compton of Englee Newfoundland, and another brother whose passed at birth.

Evelyn's memory will be cherished by her children, Gloria (Howard) Johnson, William Harkleroad, Roland (Dee Dee) Harkleroad, and Brent (Kristi) Harkleroad; step-daughter, Cheryl Harkleroad of Pennsylvania; grandchildren: Brandon, Kyle, Ryan, Mindy, Chelsey, Haley, Victoria, Blake, Brooke, Tammy, Dee-Dee, Holly and Heather; great-grandchildren: Jaden, Maurah, Olivia, Steven, Caleb, Brayden, Colton, Carmi, Roland, Roman, Noah, Nevaeh, Mylah, Mason and Bentley; her siblings: John Compton of Englee Newfoundland, Seymour Compton of Englee Newfoundland, George Compton of Nova Scotia, David Compton of Nova Scotia, Roland Compton of Englee Newfoundland, Francis Compton of Englee Newfoundland, Lloyd Compton of Englee Newfoundland, Mable (Joe) Callahan of St. John's Newfoundland, and Mary (Frank) Spencer of Greenwood Nova Scotia; and several nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Evelyn will be laid to rest with her husband at 12:30pm on Tuesday, February 1, 2022 at Forest Hills Memorial Gardens in Tipp City, Ohio.
