Eugene W. Seman

Seman, Eugene W. "Gene", age 78, of Kettering, passed away on Saturday, October 11, 2008. Gene was a 2008 inductee into the Stivers High School Athletic Hall of Fame. Gene earned nine letters at Stivers. He earned four in track, two in basketball, two in football, and one in baseball. A teammate and close friend of Chuck Grigsby on the 1947 City Championship team, he was team captain of the 1947 and 1948 basketball squad. His senior year he was named to the All-City basketball and football teams and placed third in the City and District in the 440 dash. After high school, he enlisted in the United States Navy and served as a "Seaman" 1st Class. After discharge, he worked at D.E.S.C. for over 36 years. He is an active member of the Kettering Kiwanis Club and a volunteer with the City of Kettering. Seldom could one attend any Stivers related event and fail to see him. Gene was chosen leader of the "Alumni Luncheons" at MCL since thier beginnings and worked diligently with the committees on his own Class of 1948 reunions.

Gene is survived by his wife of 33 years: Shirley (Baker) Seman; son: Larry Walter Seman; step daughters: Joyce Penwell and Sue Knox; grandchildren: Amanda Van Schaik, whom he raised, Mark Howard, Jeff Howard, Leslie Penwell, Adam Knox, Nicholas Seman; 12 great grandchildren; brother and sister-in-law: Jerry (Rosalie) Seman; and numerous nieces, nephews, family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents: Walter Phillip & clara Elizabeth (Stritenberger) Seman; son: Jeffrey Seman; grandson: Brian Penwell; brother: Marvin Seman; and sister: Patricia (Seman) Hawthorne.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Friday, October 17, 2008 at Newcomer Funeral Home (South Chapel) 3940 Kettering Blvd., Kettering with Pastor Andrew Brewster officiating. Entombment will follow the service at Woodland Cemetery in Dayton. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday evening from 4:00 - 8:00 P.M. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Kettering Kiwanis Club, envelopes will be provided.
