MILLER, Eugene Walter, age 90, of Miamisburg, passed away Fri., Oct. 27, 2006. Eugene was born on Jan. 8, 1916 in Cincinnati, OH to William & Ora Miller. He was a graduate of Cincinnati Woodward H.S. and attended Northwestern Univ. Eugene was a gifted athlete and set the world indoor pole vault record in 1937, played professional baseball with Philadelphia of the National League from 1937 - 1940, was the National Intercollegiate pole vault champion in 1940, during W.W.II served in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a fighter pilot in the pacific theater, was a test pilot with the U.S. Air Force after W.W.II and retired from the City of Dayton Water Dept. in 1977. He also was an accomplished poet and songwriter; wrote lyrics for "Please release me, Let me go" recorded by Engleburt Humperdinck and "Just the way you are" sung by Billy Joel. Eugene was preceded in death by his wife Elizabeth. He is survived by daughter Debbie of Cincinnati; son Dave & wife Rosie of Moraine and 4 grandchildren. No local visitation. Memorial services will be held at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church, Clearwater, FL and burial will be at sea.
