Esther (Burbacher) Hess was born in Barnesville, Ohio on April 30, 1927, to Ernest O. and Minnie (Crawford) Burbacher. She received her Bachelor of Science degree from The Ohio State University, Department of Human Resources where she was a member of Phi Upsilon Omicron dietetic honorary and Alpha Delta Pi social sororities. She completed her dietetic internship at the hospital of the University of Michigan after which she served as Assistant Administrator.
After her marriage, she worked in Indianapolis, Indiana as a dietitian at the Fort Benjamin Harrison Hospital and the Veteran's Hospital and as Manager of the cafeteria at the Western Electric Plant in Indianapolis.
She and her husband, Bill, lived in Montgomery, Ohio, Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, and Utica, New York, before retiring to Huron, Ohio in 1988. Since 2012, Esther was a resident at the Trinity Community of Beavercreek, Ohio. She had been active in PTAs, Women's Clubs, Speakers Bureau, school levy campaigns, and Band Parents. She was also a member of the American Dietetic Association.
She is survived by two sons, Jeff (Kathy) of Beavercreek, Ohio and Jim (Karen) of Philadelphia; one daughter Kristen (Ron) Mabon of Indiana, Pennsylvania; fourteen grandchildren; 39 (soon to be 40) great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of fifty-eight years, Robert Wm. (Bill) Hess of Huron, Ohio; her parents; her brothers, Claire killed in World War II and Don of Columbus, Ohio; and her sisters, Mildred Mather of Wilmette, Illinois and Gene Boswell, of Huron.
Burial will be in Oakdale Cemetery, Urbana, Ohio.
