Esther Ellen Greenewald passed peacefully into the presence of her savior, Jesus, before the sunrise of December 23, 2021. She was the eldest of three children born to Paul H. and Alice M. Hanke, nee Daniels, in Fort Wayne, Indiana. She graduated from the University of Delaware and The Ohio State University with a Masters of Arts degree in Linguistics. Her parents and brothers Paul A. and John (Nancy) survive her.
She married John H. Greenewald on June 17, 1989 in Columbus, Ohio. She is survived by him and the seven children they were blessed with: Kristjan (Katelyn), Magdalena (James) Kirsch, Sophia (Samuel) Rowe, Stefan (Madison Arce), Susanna, Calvin, and Gresham. She lived to see one grandchild, Adaleah, born to Magdalena and James, and to hear of another on the way.
She loved to learn and to share what she learned with others. First and foremost she was a homeschool teacher to all her children, some through high school. She held many formal teaching positions since graduate school where she first taught linguistics. She taught ESL, literature, grammar, English, and German to many including students at Dominion Academy of Dayton. She also volunteered at No Longer Strangers, an education-focused Christian ministry to refugees.
She was a devoted daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She loved "being together" with her family and friends. She enjoyed traveling to see the family as it has geographically spread over the years.
She will be deeply missed but take comfort, with gratitude, that we have been changed by her example of fighting the good fight of faith.
Memorial gifts may be sent to No Longer Strangers, 1231 N. Main Street, Dayton, Ohio, 45405; or to Hospice of Dayton, 324 Wilmington Ave, Dayton, Ohio 45420, which were a comfort to her in her final weeks.
