Ellen Fern Carpenter

April 28, 1942 — March 26, 2021

After a long illness, Ellen Fern Carpenter, age 78, went to her heavenly home on Friday March 26, 2021. She was born to Lula Barker and Daniel Pugh on April 28, 1942. Fern graduated from Little Miami high School in 1960. Fern is survived by her children: Dan (JoAnn) Mummert, Sherre (Greg) Davis; Mike (Anita) Mummert; Doug (LaTonya) Sawyer; Robyn Darr; and Chad Sawyer. She also has 12 grandchildren Derek (Kimberly) Mummert; James (Emily) Mummert; Matthew (Samantha) Davis; TJ (Holly) Mummert; Lauren (Zach) Motter; Jessica (Zach) Stanton; Andrew Mummert; Bree (Nich) Carpenter; Jessie Hodge; Tara Hodge; Beulah Ayers; and Heather Darr. Fern also has 10 great grandchildren: Harrison Mummert (who has been waiting for Grandma to join him in heaven); Marshall Mummert; Adalee Mummert; Owen Mummert; Lincoln Mummert; Kieley Mummert; Declan Mummert; Finn Mummert; Ryder Woods; and Lydia Woods.

Fern is also survived by her sister Norma Barnes and sisters-in-laws Audrey Sallee and Cheryl Pugh.

Growing up one could find her doing the things she loved the most - singing with her siblings and playing sports like basketball and volleyball. She spent several years down in Tennessee before later returning to Ohio. An active member of the Red Hatters Ladies club and Secretary at John Sale Manor - you would frequently find Ellen drinking her morning coffee while socializing with her friends downstairs. A defining characteristic of Ellen was her penmanship. She would send letters to any and all until a series of strokes robbed her of that ability in 2015.

Sweets and treats were on the menu whenever her grandkids visited! There was always conversation to be had about the latest episode of Survivor or Amazing Race, two of her favorite shows. Fern was so proud of her grandkids and the wide spectrum of their accomplishments. She couldn't help but brag to her peers! Her giving heart would extend through her great grandkids and anyone else who would come into contact with her.

Fern last attended Dayton Avenue Baptist Church in Xenia where she enjoyed serving others by making the coffee on Sunday mornings.

The family would also like to thank the staffs at Hillside Assisted Living in Xenia and Beavercreek Health and Rehab Center where she resided the final four years. Fern's "Feistiness" commanded the room, and you left thankful for your interaction with her. She will be dearly missed.

In Lieu of flowers donations can be made to: Miami Valley Down Syndrome Association in the Name of Ellen Fern Carpenter and Finn Mummert.
