Elizabeth "Betty" Endres Smith passed away peacefully on February 6, 2021 at the age of 91. She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Robert McKeown Smith. Betty was also preceded in death by her parents, Howard and Florence (Henderson) Endres and her brother, David Endres and his wife Ruth (Lutz) Endres from Dearborn, MI.
Betty was born on November 15, 1929 in Detroit, MI. She graduated from Detroit Mackenzie High School in 1947 and from Hillsdale College in 1952 where she received a degree in Home Economics. Hillsdale College is also where Betty and Bob nurtured their romance and later married on June 6, 1952.
Betty and Bob spent the first forty years of their married life in Detroit, MI and in the northern suburbs of Southfield, Bloomfield Hills, and Clarkston. After raising their four children, Betty and Bob left the Detroit area and moved to Harbor Springs, Michigan. They lived for many years in Birchwood and thoroughly enjoyed the community, the activities, and entertaining their many friends.
Betty is survived by her four children Robert (Holly) in Dayton OH, William (Wendy) in Northville MI, Thomas (Cheryl) in Holland MI, and Catherine Kigar in Plymouth, MI; nine grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren and eight nieces and nephews.
In her younger years, one of Betty's favorite activities was bowling. She was on a weekly bowling league for several years and was easily the best bowler in the family. During the early years of their marriage, Betty and Bob took clients to Detroit Lions football games and routinely dined at Carl's Chop House after the games. While, Betty enjoyed dining out, she also grew to be a loyal Lion fan.
In later years, Betty enjoyed playing bridge and bunco with her friends in Birchwood and delighted in the company of her lady friends. With her degree in Home Economics, Betty had a flare for decorating. She found pleasure in assisting with decorating the Birchwood Country Club and "touches" of Betty can be seen throughout the clubhouse today. Her spunk, fun nature, and generosity will be greatly missed.
A Celebration of Life will take place at a date TBD with internment at the Harbor Springs cemetery in the spring or summer.
