Age 78 of Dayton, Ohio passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on March 5, 2009. .A devoted loving husband, father and grandfather He was born June 29, 1930 in Little Hocking, Ohio to the late Charles and Bernice Newman. Raised in Portsmouth, Ohio he was a1948 graduate of Portsmouth High School, where he excelled in baseball, basketball and football. After graduating from PHS, he joined the US Navy and was stationed in San Diego, California. Eddie married Sally (Elliott) on October 22, 1957. Eddie worked for NCR in Dayton, Ohio for 19 years, Bordens Dairy and Inland General Motors. Eddie's passion was sports officiating; he worked baseball, basketball, football and volleyball for over 50 years. He was a member of Greater Dayton Umpires Association, Greene County Sports Official Association, Montgomery County and Kettering Volleyball Associations. Eddie was also inducted into the Miami Valley Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame in 1987. Eddie and Sally raised their 4 children in Dayton, Ohio He is survived by his wife of over 51 years Sally; four children, Stephen (Jo Anne) Newman Bothell WA, Pamela (Jim) Schlemmer Kettering OH, Brickette (Marc) Solgan Crystal River FL and Brent (Shelle) Newman Noblesville, IN. Eddie dearly loved his grandchildren and great grandchildren: Stephen II, Rodney, Joshua, Ian, Justin Clinton, Jacob, Levi, Mackenzie, Stephen III, Keaton, Savannah, Caleb, Blake and Abbigail. Eddie was the 'baby brother" to Bill (Arlene) Newman and Betty Schmidt of Portsmouth, Ohio. There are a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and many of his loving friends that he thoroughly enjoyed seeing and talking with. Special thanks to Public Health Home Care, Mary Jane Wells RN, Freda Taylor and Betty Martin. A gathering of family and friends will be held Sunday March 8, 2009 at Newcomer Funeral Home, 4101 Needmore Road Dayton, Ohio 45424 from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM. Funeral Services will be held immediately following the visitation at 3:00 PM at the Newcomer Funeral Home. Private graveside services will be held Monday at 1:00 PM at Scioto Burial Park in Rushtown, Scioto County Ohio.
