Gilbert, Edward Laurence, 86 of Delaware, Ohio passed away on Friday morning, June 20, 2014. He was preceded in death by his parents, Stephen R. Gilbert and Edith M. Gilbert and his daughter, Susan. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Donna, his daughters, Edith and Nancy, and his sons, Edward (Linda), Stephen (Barbara), Laurence (Darleen) and his cat, Garibaldi; as well as numerous nieces and nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He earned a Bachelors degree in Agricultural Economics from the University of Illinois. He served in the Marines during WWII and was a proud member of the United States Air Force, a 21 year veteran, retiring in 1970 as a Lieutenant Colonel. He was awarded a Bronze Star and a Meritorious Service Medal as well as various commendations through the years.
During his tours of duty he was stationed with his family in Anchorage, Alaska; London, England; Ankara, Turkey and unaccompanied in Vietnam. His assignments brought him back to finish where he started at Wright-Patterson AFB.
He owned the News Shop in Delaware, Ohio from 1973 to 1996 and was a long time member of the First Presbyterian Church.
His Masonic activities included membership with Yates City Lodge #448 A.F. & A.M. Yates City IL; Hiram Lodge #18 F&A.M.; Sydney Moore Council #84 R.&S.; Anchorage Chapter #3 R.A.M., Anchorage, AK; Anchorage Commandery #2 K.T.; Aladdin Shrine A.A.O.M.S.; National Sojourners Chapter #10; and Heroes of '76. He was also active with the B.O.E. Elks #1130 Marysville, OH, the American Legion Post #115 Delaware, OH, and the Boy Scouts of America.
Ed and his wife Donna were long time Airstreamers, attending 25 WBCCI International Rallies and various international caravans including to the Arctic Circle, South Africa, Central America and the Panama Canal. They were long time members of the Columbus OH unit of WBCCI.
His hobbies included offset printing, caning chairs, constantly searching for new information and finding bargains - he could never pass one up!
As Ed always said, he would enjoy life in this world and then the next!
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 pm on Friday, June 27, 2014 at the First Presbyterian Church of Delaware, 73 Winter Street, Delaware Ohio. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project (www.woundedwarriorproject.org).
