Edna A. Haase

HAASE, EDNA HARRIET (LIGHTLE)

Age 83, of New Palestine, Indiana, passed into the arms of the Lord on Thursday, September 14, 2006, in Dayton, OH. Mrs. Haase was born January 17, 1923 in Indianapolis, Indiana, the eldest child of seven born to Forest Jay Lightle, Sr. and Lucy Davis Crannell Lightle. A 1941graduate of Shortridge High School, she attended Indiana University (1941-1942) in Indianapolis. During High School she worked for the Betty Gay Dress Shop (near the old L.S. Ayres building) and after graduation for the Hartford A&I Insurance Co., both in Indianapolis. Mrs. Haase belonged to what Tom Brokow calls the "Greatest Generation", contributing to the World War II civilian effort by working for the Lukas Harold Corp. war-production plant (1941) on the Circle in a downtown Indianapolis location. During the war her job was to line up the cross hairs on the then super- secret Norden Bombsight. She left Lucas Harold at the end of the war. Thereafter she worked at the Indianapolis Times newspaper and Link Belt (1945-6). From 1946 to 1949, she was employed by the Naval Ordinance Plant (formerly Lucas Harold) at 21st St. and Arlington. In 1961 she rejoined the workforce at Ft. Benjamin Harrison before returning to the U.S. Navy's Naval Aviation Facility-Indianapolis NAFI (formerly Naval Ordinance and Lukas Harold) from which she retired as an Accounting Technician in 1985.

On January 24, 1947 she married Harry Joseph "Bud" Haase, a World War II Veteran, in St. Paul's Methodist Church in Indianapolis. Later she became the mother of twins, staying home with her daughters for nearly 12 years. In Mar 1959 Mr. & Mrs. Haase moved to New Palestine, Indiana, joining the New Palestine Methodist church, where she remained a member until her death. Trained in voice, she was a soloist and member of the church choir for many years. After 52 years of marriage, Mr. Haase died in 1999.

Mrs. Haase's ancestors, the Van Cleve family, came from Holland and settled in New Amsterdam in 1653. Her Great-Great-Great-Great Grandfather fought in the American Revolution and her Great-Great-Great-Great Grandmother, Catherine Benham Van Cleve Thompson, was the first woman settler in Dayton, Ohio when it was founded in 1796. Many of her other ancestors fought in the Civil War. Squire Boone (Daniel's brother) was the husband of her 1st cousin 6 times removed. The Wright Brothers were her 3rd cousin's twice removed. Furthermore, through the Van Cleve's she was related by marriage to President Abraham Lincoln. Mrs. Haase had a strong sense of history and family.

In 2000, Mrs. Haase received the "Certificate of Recognition" from the Secretary of Defense for her work with the Department of the Navy during the "Cold War" - "for promoting peace and stability for this nation" during those 50 years of crisis. Also in May 2001 she moved to the Dayton, OH area to be near her daughters.

Mrs. Haase was blessed the Lord's great gifts of friendship, industry, and fellowship…many will miss her easy smile, helping hands, and cheerful presence.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brothers: David Nelson Lightle, and Forest Jay (and Jane) Lightle, Jr.; her sisters Lucy Bertha Lightle (John) Laham and Grace Norma Lightle (and Jack) Voigt.

She is survived by her brothers: Sherman Joseph Lightle of Port Charlotte, FL, and John Robert (and Marjorie) Lightle of Cypress, CA, her twin daughters, Mrs. Carolyn Jo Haase (and Steve) Lindle of Beavercreek, OH, and Mrs. Marilyn Kay Haase (and Jim) Forcum of Beavercreek, OH; her Grandchildren Darian Michelle (and Nick Notis) Lindle , Laura L. Lindle, both living in Seattle, WA; Daniel Thomas (and Nicole) Forcum, and David James Forcum, both of Cincinnati, OH; and her Great-Grandson, Logan Edward Forcum, plus numerous nieces and nephews and cousins.

Visitation will be held on Monday, Sep 18, 2006 from 5:00-8:00 pm at the NEWCOMER FAMILY FUNERAL HOME-BEAVERCREEK CHAPEL, 3380 Dayton-Xenia Road, Beavercreek, OH 45432, followed by a private internment at Washington Park Cemetery-East, Indianapolis, IN. A memorial service will be held at New Palestine United Methodist Church, 3565 South 500 West (Gem Road), New Palestine, IN on Sunday, Oct 1, 2006 at 2:00 pm, followed refreshments at the church. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Edna's name to the Alzheimer's Association (http://www.alz.org) or the American Heart Association.
