Earl Charles Long

August 5, 1948 — February 3, 2014

Earl Charles Long, age 65 of Dayton, passed away on Monday, February 3, 2014 at his home. He was born in Charleston, WV to the late Earl Charles & Ethel (Comer) Long.

Earl is preceded in death by his parents, and his niece, Julia.

Earl served honorable in the USMC, having spent a year of his life in Japan recovering from wounds inflicted in battle. He was very active with the Vietnam Veterans and was a participant in the construction of the Vietnam Veteran's Memorial in Dayton. He was an avid outdoorsman. Camping, fishing, hiking, and enjoying nature was where he found his peace and comfort. He took great pride in being the one to provide the first fishing pole and to introduce his grandchildren to the love of fishing. He spent every day of his retirement caring for his grandchildren. They were his light and his world. Earl was the rock of the family, never closing his door to anyone in need, be it family or friend.

Earl is survived by his children: Shawn Long, Levi Long, and Sara (Aaron) Casey, and Carly Berry; and his grandchildren: Hailey, Jullian, and Ava. He is also survived by his best friend, Cheri; his siblings: Patricia Bailey, Joanilla Ely, and Roger Bailey, along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. The family wishes to thank the nursing staff at Hospice of Dayton for their excellent care and compassion. Through their works, his final wish to pass away at home was granted.

Visitation will be 1-3:00 PM, Saturday, February 8, 2014 at Newcomer Funeral Home, 3380 Dayton-Xenia Road, Beavercreek, OH 45432. A memorial service to be held at 3:00 also at the funeral home.
