Dr. Kwang Yil "Ken" Kim, age 83, of Nonsan, South Korea, passed away at Miami Valley Hospital - South, on February 29, 2024. He was born on November 10, 1940 to the late Kumok Kim and Yusong Park. Dr. Kim attended Kyunggi High School and Seoul National University, then earned his PhD in chemistry from SUNY at Buffalo after coming to the United States in 1968.
Dr. Kim is preceded in death by his parents and his three sisters.
He is survived by wife of 55 years, Jung Hee "Julie" Kim; son, Geoff Kim; daughter, Jennifer Jo; grandchildren, Sophie Jo and Nathan Jo.
Dr. Kim retired from Sinclair Community College where he was a professor of chemistry. He also retired as a civilian research chemist from Wright Patterson Air Force Base, where he worked on the Minuteman 2 Missile. Dr. Kim holds a patent for a battery microcalorimeter. He was the President of the Dayton Area Korea Association for many years. Dr. Kim was the President and Founder of the Hope Social Services Center. He enjoyed organizing activities to honor Korean War Veterans, for which he received recognition from the South Korean government.
In his free time, Dr. Kim had an uncanny ability to fix anything mechanical and loved to watch Ohio State Football.
Visitation will be held from 2:00pm-3:00pm on March 8, 2024 at Newcomer Funeral Home (3380 Dayton-Xenia Rd., Beavercreek), where funeral services will begin at 3:00pm.
