Dr. James C Appleton, passed away on Friday, December 22, 2017. Jim was born on April 7, 1922, at Fort Hamilton Hospital, Butler County, Ohio. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Elizabeth M. Appleton. He is survived by children, Chris Appleton (Carolyn), Tom Appleton (Ellen), Marti Ernstoff (Dr. Jon), Cindy Soller, and William Appleton; and grandchildren, Craig Soller (Ashley), Brian Soller, Dr. Eric Soller (Jamie), Dr. Nathaniel Ernstoff, Elisa Ernstoff, Terri Reese, and James Christopher Appleton. He was preceded in death by his parents, Royal and Lula Blanch (Freshwater) Appleton, Shandon; wife, Carol (Thompson) Appleton of Pleasant Hill and Piqua; and son-in-law, Dr. Mark Soller, Youngstown.
He attended Shandon Public Schools, skipping a year and graduating at 17. He then received a BS from Miami University, Oxford in 1943 and joined the U.S. Navy that same year. He earned a medical degree from the University of Louisville in 1947 and spent the next year as an intern at Mercy Hospital, Springfield. He was then assigned to Saipan, in the Mariana Islands, then to Texas and was honorably discharged with the rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade. He contracted polio while in the Navy and spent many months recovering.
After discharge from the Navy, he started a Family Medical practice in Clinton, Kentucky. He then moved to Boston for anesthesiology training at Boston Eye and Ear. He returned to Dayton as a board certified anesthesiologist at Miami Valley and Good Samaritan hospitals where he continued working until his retirement in 1988.
He was an adviser to Sinclair Community College and was recommended by his peers as the clinical professor at the establishment of the Wright State Medical School. He was the president of the Ohio Society of Anesthesiologists and a long-standing member of the Engineers Club.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, December 26, 2017 from 5-7pm at Newcomer South Kettering Chapel, 3940 Kettering Blvd, Kettering, OH. A private graveside service will be held at New London Cemetery, Shandon, OH, where Jim will be laid to rest. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Ohio's Hospice of Dayton, 324 Wilmington Avenue, Dayton, OH 45420 or Grace United Methodist Church, 1001 Harvard Blvd, Dayton, OH 45406.
