Dorothy Vaughn

Dorothy Z. Vaughn, of Mill Hall, Pennsylvania, crossed-over quietly on May 17 at the Trinity Community of Beavercreek, Ohio. She passed with her family gathered around her after a short but courageous fight with her illness.

Dorothy was born on October 6, 1928 in Pittsburgh and graduated from Watsontown High School in Watsontown, Pennsylvania in 1945. She attended Bucknell University where she graduated with high honors in 1949, and moved to Deposit, New York where she was employed as a teacher in the local school system. She did post-graduate work at both Bucknell and Penn State and joined the faculty at Mansfield University in 1961 where she served as both a classroom teacher and as the university's Assistant Dean of Women. She met her second husband, Franklin H. Vaughn, while at Mansfield, and joined with him in marriage on June 26, 1965. Both were asked to join the faculty at Lock Haven University in Lock Haven, Pennsylvania that same year, where they taught together in the English Department until their retirements in 1991. Both Dorothy and Frank were subsequently inducted into the university's Roll of Service, the faculty honorary society for Lock Haven's outstanding teachers. She retired with her husband to Sanibel Island, Florida where they were active members of Sanibel's social and cultural life for many years.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Franklin, in 2009. She is survived by her son, Donald Millward, and her daughter-in-law, Dru (Lawrence) of Bellbrook, Ohio, and her two granddaughters, Laurie Moore, of Hebron, Ohio, and Kathryn Ortiz, of Centerville, Ohio.
