Dorothy Heroy

July 28, 1915 — November 9, 2012

Dorothy Meincke Heroy, born Dorothy Marie Meincke on July 28, 1915, died Friday, November 9, 2012 at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, OH. While she lived the last five years at 10 Wilmington Place, she spent her childhood in the East, attending White Plains High School and Skidmore College in Saratoga. She married her high school sweetheart and very lucky man, William Bayard Heroy, Jr. in 1937. After a stint in Princeton, Dot and Bill migrated to the southwest: living in Carlsbad, New Mexico and Midland, Texas before settling in Dallas, Texas for over 40 years. After retirement, Dorothy and Bill took up residence in Durham, North Carolina at The Forest at Duke. It was only after Bill's death in 2006 that Dot moved to Dayton to live closer to family.
Countless friends and family will miss her tart sense of humor and strong sense of social responsibility. She was the mother of four--Bard (Bayard Page Heroy), Dave (David Bassett Heroy), June (June Heroy Leverett) and Barb (Barbara Heroy John; the grandmother of seven-- William B. Heroy III and Catherine Anne Heroy (Bard's children), Kimberly Ayn Heroy-Rogalski (Dave's daughter); and Eluid John, Shaka Nesta John, Micah Isaiah Stock, Rachel Mallory Stock (Barb's children); and the great grandmother of four—Cody Michael Heroy, Stephen Page Heroy, Maya Heroy Rogalski and Theo Heroy Rogalski.
She also leaves behind many lucky enough to be related in law and in spirit: Richard Douglas Stock, Barbara McGlothlen Heroy, Joanne Heroy Giller, and Greg Rogalski.
For the Meincke clan, she has been a family stalwart for the surviving children of her beloved sister June: her namesake Dal (Dorothy Lewis Scott), Melissa Lewis, and Bob Lewis, their children, and the most recent editions—named for the 'such devoted sisters'— Carlie June and Kalli Dorothy Davis.

She also took on the mantle of matriarch for the extant Heroy crew: for Heather Kirkland and Don Beaudoin in Appalachin, New York, and their two children, Brian and Susan; for Bill Heroy II and Anna Heroy and their three sons Rob, Alex and Sam in North Carolina; and John Heroy and Jim Heroy and their families in Virginia.
Dot was a vivid presence and good friend to many at 10 Wilmington Place in Dayton and The Forest at Duke in Durham, North Carolina, and her family would like to express their gratitude to all those who enabled her to live a full and gratifying life. She was a generous contributor to causes she cared about: her college, the Sierra Club, NPR, the Nature Conservancy, and Planned Parenthood, and one of her last actions was to exercise her franchise by voting for Obama. She never stopped learning: Dot was a voracious reader, putting paid to The Hunger Games trilogy in the week prior to her hospitalization. Dot was also a bright and clever bridge player, and many a partner will miss her finesses. But most of all, Dot was a fair lady: She treated everyone to equal shares of her wry wit, her work ethic, and her compassion. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
